Mr. Huang Zhiming and his wife created the Royal Family Foods corporation in 1985. When the company failed to succeed in its early years, the founding couple decided to transform their business rather than lose their company entirely. Instead of meat, they began selling mochi, a soft, chewy Japanese treat made from sweet rice flour. Japanese mochi is typically filled with red bean paste but Taiwanese mochi is known for having a wider array of fillings and flavors—some of Royal Family Foods’ more exciting flavors include tiramisu, strawberry cheesecake, and matcha latte. One of Royal Family Foods’ most popular treats is their original Choco Ball, which is filled with jam and cotton candy and coated in a thin layer of chocolate. This version features a classic combination of peanuts and chocolate. The contrast of the hard chocolate coating and the soft, stretchy mochi beneath is especially satisfying.
