​​Dulce con leche directly translates to “sweets with milk,” and it refers to the soft, milk-based caramel candies commonly enjoyed in Latin America. Some reports say it originated in Indonesia in the 6th century, and later brought to the Philippines, Spain, and finally into Latin America.
