This cute little Gianduiotto is a delicious bite-sized chocolate made with the addition of toasty hazelnut paste—but its history, stemming from the Gianduia, is massive! Named for a beloved character from Italian Commedia Dell’arte theatre who loved food, wine, and his family, Gianduia the character’s tricorn hat inspired this iconic chocolate paste and the shape it is always piped into. A widely held belief is that Gianduia was created in the 1800s when taxes on cocoa became too high, forcing chocolatiers to turn to supplementing the cocoa paste with ground hazelnuts, accidentally inventing something altogether more delicious!
