Chirashi Sushi

In Japan, Hinamatsuri, also known as Girls’ Day, is celebrated on March 3rd. It is a traditional event where families pray for the health and happiness of young girls. On this day, it is very common to prepare and enjoy chirashi sushi at home .This colorful dish, topped with various ingredients, represents joy and celebration, and its bright appearance reminds us of the arrival of spring. That is why I felt chirashi sushi is the perfect dish to share during this time of year.

Cook Time: 10 minutes

Servings: 2-3

Ingredients

  • 2 cups cooked sushi rice (short-grain rice)
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs
  • A pinch of salt and sugar for eggs
  • 6–8 snow peas, blanched and sliced
  • Optional toppings: sliced cucumber, pickled ginger, or sesame
    seeds

Preparation

  1. In a small bowl, mix rice vinegar, sugar, and salt until dissolved. Gently fold into cooked sushi rice. Let it cool slightly.
  2. Beat the eggs with a pinch of salt and sugar, then cook thin omelets in a lightly oiled pan. Once cooled, slice into thin strips (kinshi tamago).
  3. Blanch the snow peas in boiling water for 1 minute, then slice thinly.
  4. Place the seasoned sushi rice in a serving bowl or individual bowls.
  5. Arrange the kinshi tamago strips and snow peas on top. Add optional toppings if desired.
  6. Serve immediately and enjoy!
